This is our first holiday with my husband being deployed overseas, so while I love the 4th and all it's festivities, the thought of heading down to the big field on post and immersing myself in a ton of other families was a little overwhelming. I'm still a little sad that my best friend is gone and seeing all the other daddies might have been a little too much on one of my favorite holidays.
We decided instead to hit the pool first thing when they opened, and after a good hour and a half we headed home to get changed and drive to a friend's small bbq. It was nice and small, with good food and great company. The kids had a blast, and we shot off a few small fireworks before heading back on post for the big show.
Instead of getting in the huge crowd, we parked at one of the offices and sat in a field. We were close enough to see the main stage and hear the band a bit, but also separated from the madness and the kids could run free in the field.
